Choosing a TV Model

The best way to find a TV that will make you happy is to watch it in the store before you purchase it. There are a number of nagging issues you can identify by just observing the television for a few minutes. Just know what you are looking for. Here are some suggestions.

Bring your own DVD’s to watch on the TV you are considering to get the best idea of the picture quality. Stores will often use high quality HD feeds to show off their models best features but you will not always be watching high quality HD feeds. You want to watch something less than a perfect HD feed to see how the television is going to display non HD feeds.

Here are some common short comings in plasma, LCD and LED lit LCD’s you will want to look for before purchasing your TV. Keep in mind no model is perfect you are looking for the model that you are most comfortable watching.

  • Smearing will most often appear on moving images so a DVD with a sports event with lots of movement
  • Picture judder is another issue that is most apparent in fast-moving action and panning shots when the images do not appear to move smoothly across the screen but rather stutter.
  • Watch for jagged edges on images of buildings or text.
  • Look for screen reflectivity by watching a scene with very dark sequences and see how the detail looks.
  • Watch the TV from different angles to see if the colours fade when not viewed head-on.
  • Check out a sunset or a close up of a face, do the colours blend subtly or appear in distinct bands
  • Check out the picture from the distance you will be watching it from at home. Large screens watched from close distances tend to show imperfections.

Before you go to look at new televisions do your homework and check out the reviews of the various manufacturers and models, set a realistic budget for the new TV (including any accessories you may have to buy) and don’t forget to take your DVD to do your own test of the various models.
